Diet: Fasting (Eating with Discernment)

“The best of all medicines is resting and fasting. To lengthen thy life, lessen thy meals” Benjamin Franklin

The food we eat can be the best medicine or the worst poison. Our contemporary dietary habits – 3 large meals a day, snacks in between – result in a state of constant digestion. Many Americans travel from cradle to grave with a constant flow of food (in various states of decomposition) in the digestive system. Add to this the toxicity of what is consumed: processed food, refined sugars, excessive animal consumption, recreational and pharmaceutical drugs and environmental pollution – and the organs become overloaded with toxins and putrefied waste. In this condition internal parasites thrive and the immune system is weakened – resulting in low energy, chronic allergies, and susceptibility to disease.

Fasting, rather than the denial of food, is eating with discernment. For centuries, fasting has been used by the Wise to achieve robust health and spiritual inspiration. Fasting is food as medicine. “The ideal technique for successful fasting is the use of fresh, raw fruit and vegetable juices. On such a diet, the full spectrum of nutrients is supplied in an easily assimilated form, so the digestive tract is able to remain essentially at rest. It is only through the combined use of both cleansing processes (fasting), and a very good diet, that one will be able to reach her or his maximal level of physical health and an unclouded consciousness.”- Rudolph Ballentine, M.D. “Diet & Nutrition”

Through a juice fast the organs of digestion are given a chance to rest, and they begin to release the accumulated toxins that have built up over time. It is amazing to experience when the body releases the toxic accumulations of bad-habits, the very desires and habits themselves are released. It is a good idea to consider colonic or enema therapy with a juice fast. This helps release the impacted and toxic accumulations from the large intestine that have been loosened through the fast.

“When the body fasts, the soul is hungry.” Otto Buchinger Sr. MD
